It only took four days for the constant assault of every thought in a three mile radius to drive him insane. He responded by creating an illusory world that encompassed the size of a football stadium, trapping and disorienting everyone caught inside the field of influence. Using comfort images and memories taken from their minds, he kept them placid. And then one by one, he began to methodically end their lives with an old rip and tear can opener. All so he could get some peace and quiet. In the end, the city had to send in robots to drug him into unconsciousness.

Since that day, Jeremy Red had been locked up in the Fermi Institute for Mental Health. Every psionic dampening drug and piece of hardware known had been brought to bear to keep the lines between Jeremy’s consciousness and the rest of the world crisp. But it wasn’t quite enough, and those working at the hospital were only too aware that sometimes thoughts bled through. People across the country had lost sleep wondering what would happen if Jeremy Red were to get out.
